چکیده

Dislocation interaction with and accumulation at twin boundaries have been reported to significantly improve the strength and ductility of nanostructured face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys. Here we systematically describe plausible dislocation interactions at twin boundaries. Depending on the characteristics of the dislocations and the driving stress, possible dislocation reactions at twin boundaries include cross-slip into the twinning plane to cause twin growth or de-twinning, formation of a sessile stair-rod dislocation at the twin boundary, and transmission across the twin boundary. The energy barriers for these dislocation reactions are described and compared. 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Twin intersection mechanisms in nanocrystalline fcc metals

Deformation twins have been reported to produce high strength and ductility. Intersections of deformation twins may affect the microstructural evolution during plastic deformation and consequently influence mechanical properties. However, the mechanisms governing twin-intersection behavior remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated twin intersection mechanisms by observing twin tr...

Investigation of the elementary mechanisms controlling dislocation/twin boundary interactions in fcc metals and alloys: from conventional to advanced TEM characterization

The elementary mechanisms controlling the interactions between lattice gliding dislocations and twin boundaries were carefully analyzed using conventional and advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques in both bulk coarsegrained Fe-Mn-C TWIP steels with deformation twins and nanocrystalline Palladium thin films with nanoscale growth twins. The results reveal that the individual disloc...

Revisiting the intra-granular dislocation extension model for flow stress in nanocrystalline metals

In our previous work (R.J. Asaro, P. Krysl and B. Kad, Philos. Mag. Lett. 83 (2003) p.733; P. Gu, B. Kad and M. Dao, Scr. Mater. 62 (2010) p.361), the intra-granular partial dislocation extension model was shown to be consistent with the experimental data of flow stress in nanocrystalline FCC materials. However, since the averaged extension was taken for a nonuniform loop, the model predicted s...

Deformation twinning in nanocrystalline materials

Nanocrystalline (nc) materials can be defined as solids with grain sizes in the range of 1–100 nm. Contrary to coarse-grained metals, which become more difficult to twin with decreasing grain size, nanocrystalline face-centered-cubic (fcc) metals become easier to twin with decreasing grain size, reaching a maximum twinning probability, and then become more difficult to twin when the grain size ...

Dislocation–Twin Boundary Interactions Induced Nanocrystalline via SPD Processing in Bulk Metals

This report investigated dislocation-twin boundary (TB) interactions that cause the TB to disappear and turn into a high-angle grain boundary (GB). The evolution of the microstructural characteristics of Hadfield steel was shown as a function of severe plastic deformation processing time. Sessile Frank partial dislocations and/or sessile unit dislocations were formed on the TB through possible ...
